Local Bar Hopping Goes Hi-Tech

Written by KEYT Anchor

Are you being watched? The next time you're enjoying a night out on Santa Barbara's State Street, you might want to check over your shoulder for a camera.

There's a chance it's linked to a new, social networking website called Barspace. It's essentially a website and i-Phone application that bar hops for you. Just log on to learn about some of the best spots in the area. A live webcam even lets you look in on each bar that subscribes to the service, so people can see what's going on inside.

Not everyone is comfortable with the idea of being watched, so some establishments post signs notifying customers about the small webcams inside. There's no sound with the cameras and they're controled by each, respective establishment which can adjust image quality and turn them on and off at their discretion.

Several of Santa Barbara's bar owners who are subscribed to the technology tell KEY News the new technology is being well received. However, it can also pose a problem. If someone logs on to see a bar looking empty, they're likely to avoid it.
