Jury selection begins in Mission burglary

Jury selection began today in the trial of a man suspected of stealing relics from the Sanbuenaventura Mission.

Newly installed surveillance cameras caught the burglary on tape. But it took several days for the staff to notice what was missing.

Mission officials said the video shows a man taking relics out of a glass case and a frame in the Baptism room.  It also shows him tasting oil and spitting it out.  It appears he mistook the oil for wine.

Ventura police arrested 26-year-old transient Edward Burgess in November.

They also recovered eight of the nine relics taken in the case.
