Job Cuts Announced At Vandenberg

Written by KEYT Sports

Earlier this week 40 United Launch Alliance workers were laid off at Vandenberg Air Force Base and on Thursday the Air Force announced that in 2012, nearly 100 civilian positions will be eliminated.

The ULA layoffs were expected as the company's Delta II rocket program came to an end, however the Air Force's upcoming layoffs did come as a surprise to some.

The City of Lompoc depends on Vandenberg as a piece to the city's financial stability and despite the layoffs, the city's mayor is seeing it as a glass half-full situation. In July Space X, a company which currently employs 1,400 people at Vandenberg, broke ground on a massive facility, and Mayor John Linn says that will lead to more jobs down the road.

Within the city other projects are on-going, including a police/fire academy which will feature the state's only high-speed driving track for law enforcement. There's also a multi-million dollar project in the works to turn Lompoc's old hospital into a substance abuse facility for first responders.
