Ventura County's Sheriff says his department will continue to check the immigration status of inmates even though it's no longer required. California's Attorney General is now leaving that decision up to law enforcement agencies in every county. At one point, the agencies were required to check immigration status to comply with a controversial Federal Secure Communities Policy. The Sheriff's Department prefers to do business as usual. ICE does not always recommend deportation. Usually the most violent offenders are returned to their home country.
