Racks full of beautiful prom dresses are now available at no charge for Santa Barbara area girls who can not afford a new one this year.

"Operation Prom Dress"  is coordinated by the non profit Assistance League.  The program is in its eighth year.

Chairperson Dianne Harrell says along with the dresses, they also have shoes, jewelry, and bags available.  Those coming in for the dresses have to agree to return them by the end of June.

She says it's exciting to see how happy the young girls are when they finally pick out the right dress.  "Watching a young girl put on a beautiful gown and preen in front of the mirror, what's better than that for all of us?" said Harrell.

The Assistance League is located at 1249 Veronica Springs Road.  The dresses are available from this weekend through May 11th.

The hours are  Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
