Fire, Strong Winds Tests Westmont's Readiness

Written by KEYT Sports

When a structure fire erupted near the Westmont College campus on Wednesday night, it sparked some tense moments but also tested the school's readiness.

Because of the high winds, school officials moved students into the gym once the flames were visible, a process which took just 15 minutes. For many students and faculty, it brought back a flood of memories of the November 2008 Tea Fire, which caused heavy damage to the Montecito campus.

Wednesday's fire was extinguished and nobody was injured and school officials also say it was a good opportunity to test Westmont's readiness for a fire situation. In addition to the updated evacuation plan since the Tea Fire, the school has also added a fire brigade, equipped with a brush engine and water tender which will certainly come in handy when protecting the sprawling campus during the next wildfire.
