County Fire Needs More Funding To Continue Current Services

Written by Mike DeFina

Santa Barbara -- A recent audit of the Santa Barbara County Fire Department gave the department high marks for efficiency and response time, but warned increased funds are needed to maintain current service levels.

The report will be discussed at Tuesday's board of supervisors meeting in Santa Maria. As with other departments, County Fire has had to make severe cuts in the past few years, but the report contends additional revenue sources need to be found to keep the department sustainable.

Ideas include an oil production tax as well as tweaking the property tax formula under proposition 13, among others.

Tuesday's meeting will begin at 9 a.m. at the Betteravia Government Center in Santa Maria.
