15TH Dist. State Senate Race Headed for August Runoff

Written by KEYT Producer

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - The Secretary of State says there was
no outright winner in last week's special primary election for a
Central Coast state Senate seat, so voters will head back to the
polls in August.

Republican Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee fell just short of the
majority he needed to avoid a runoff for the 15th Senate District.

Wednesday's official tally shows he had 49.4 percent of the vote
in the five coastal counties, stretching from Santa Clara County to
northern Santa Barbara County.

Former Democratic Assemblyman John Laird had nearly 42 percent,
while Libertarian and independent candidates combined for nearly 9
percent.

All four advance to the Aug. 17 runoff.

A victory by Laird would bring Democrats within one vote of the
two-thirds majority needed to pass budgets and tax increases
through the Senate.
