BUELLTON, Calif. -

It’s Criterium weekend in Santa Barbara County,  and the race is bringing more than a thousand cyclists to Lompoc and Buellton, which is a big jump from when it started.

Mike Hector, the race director said “We had 250 riders, and that was two years ago.”

Now in its third year organizers said they plan to expand. Hector said, “I see this becoming a weeklong celebration of cycling.”

Peter Pham, a cyclist from Orange County, said “It’s amazing it’s my first time out here.”

Pham and others said the most difficult part of the weekend had been the windy weather.

The championship wraps up in the city of Lompoc on Sunday.
