SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

Monday was Herb Peterson day. McDonald's restaurants from Paso Robles to Carpinteria offered $1 Egg McMuffins in the morning in honor of the late franchisee's birthday. It was the 6th annual celebration of the life and legacy of the local inventor of the iconic breakfast sandwich.

In 1968 Peterson opened his first McDonald's in Santa Barbara.  At the time, no other fast food restaurants offered breakfast until the Egg McMuffin was introduced.  Essentially it revolutionized the breakfast market and allowed the fast food restaurant's doors to open before the usual time of 11 a.m.

The offer was only available Monday, on what would have been Peterson's 95th birthday.
