Kelsey Gerckens joined the KEYT team in 2010. She has held several roles throughout the last few years and she is thrilled to be settling into the role as KEYT NewsChannel 3’s Ventura County reporter.
Kelsey was born and raised in Ventura, where she graduated from Buena High School. While at Buena, Kelsey was an active reporter and anchor for the school’s news program “Buena Today”. This program was Kelsey’s first taste of using professional equipment; to write, edit, shoot, and report her own news stories.
After graduating from Buena, Kelsey enhanced her education in journalism by receiving her B.S. in Broadcast Journalism and minor in Psychology from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. While at Cal Poly, Kelsey worked as a producer, writer, reporter and anchor for CPTV. Besides focusing on her broadcast studies, Kelsey also enjoyed her time at Cal Poly by being an Executive Board Member of Alpha Chi Omega, and studying abroad in Thailand. Even though Kelsey loved being a Cal Poly Mustang, she decided to graduate ahead of schedule and dive into the journalism world.
Kelsey spent a few months at KTLA, working under producers, writers and reporters. Working in a top market newsroom, enhanced Kelsey’s passion for covering breaking news and working under a tight deadline.
Kelsey’s love for adventure is what drew her into broadcast journalism. When she is not chasing down the day’s top stories, she loves traveling the world and spending time outdoors. She is an avid scuba diver and skier. Whenever she has free time she is most likely spending it checking out a new destination, in the ocean, or in the mountains.
Kelsey was crowned Miss Santa Barbara County 2007. In this position she represented Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties in the Miss America competition. As a third generation Venturan Kelsey is thrilled to be covering news in her hometown, where she has deep roots.
