Amtrak Pacific Surfliner further expands train service to Santa Barbara County

U.S. Highway 101 through Montecito remains closed

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UPDATE

Pacific Surfliner will temporarily increase train service to Santa Barbara County beginning Saturday, January 20 by adding one additional roundtrip between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.

U.S. Highway 101 through Montecito remains closed at least through the weekend.

The high demand for train service has already forced Pacific Surfliner to add additional cars to some of their trains traveling from Ventura County into Santa Barbara County. It continues to be the most viable option for ground transportation as driving around the blockade of mud on Highway 101 could cost travels a minimum of 5-6 hours driving.

Pacific Surfliner admits that the high demand for train service has exceeded available seating capacity on many trains, but believes the added roundtrip will alleviate that problem by adding nearly 1,000 more seats and provide an additional travel option into Santa Barbara County until the reopening of Highway 101.

Service Details

Schedules for the two new trains are listed below, and will include stops at Camarillo, Oxnard, Ventura, Carpinteria and Santa Barbara. Due to the high demand for train transportation, passengers should continue to expect busy trains and plan accordingly. Minor delays are expected due to personnel working near the railroad and continued cleanup efforts.

-----------------------------------

As train service has become the premier ground option for transportation between Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains traveling through the area are experiencing very high passenger loads.

To help remedy the situation, Pacific Surfliner is adding additional cars to select trains operating through the weekend for residents traveling between Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

A news release from the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG) said the following:

The Los Angeles – San Diego – San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) Rail Corridor Agency (Agency) has worked with Amtrak and in consultation with the Union Pacific Railroad and Metrolink to review options for providing additional service to Ventura and Santa Barbara.

Due to the significant ongoing cleanup efforts on both the rail corridor and the highway, it is not possible to operate additional trains at this time.

Many of the areas impacted by mudslides remain inaccessible to service vehicles, making the rail corridor cleanup difficult as equipment has to be brought in via rail and in between the operation of trains.

Additionally, the highway cleanup efforts are in some instances pushing additional debris and water onto the rail corridor. Cleanup efforts will continue through the weekend, which may result in trains being delayed.

We continue to provide updates regarding the resumption of service on the @pacsurfliners Twitter account and PacificSurfliner.com.
