Off-duty LAPD officer shoots dog after vicious dog attack in Ventura

VENTURA, Calif. - An off-duty LAPD officer shot and killed a dog that had attacked a woman and her dog in the 1500 block of Johnson Drive in Ventura late Wednesday afternoon.

Ventura police say the woman was walking with her dog in the area just before 5 p.m. when another dog approached and began attacking her dog. The victim tried to free her dog and was also attacked.

Police say the off-duty officer happened to be driving by and stopped to help along with other bystanders. After several attempts to control the attacking dog were unsuccessful, the off-duty LAPD officer shot and killed the dog.

The victim was taken to the hospital with multiple bite wounds on her arm. It's unclear what happened to the victim dog.

The owner of the attacking dog was located a short time later but Ventura police said no crime had occurred.

LAPD was notified of the incident and are launching an administrative investigation into the shooting by the off-duty officer.
