SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Santa Maria's Town Center West parking lot will be the site of a LGBTQ Pride Celebration on Saturday.
The family-friendly celebration and resource fair will have food, live music and entertainment as well as representatives of local organizations that provide opportunities to get involved in the community.
"Overall for us its visibility, we want people to feel proud that they're gay or lesbian, bi-sexual or transgender, gender variant", says Jessie Funes with House of Pride and Equality or H.O.P.E. which is teaming up with Central Coast Future Leaders to host the Pride Celebration on Saturday, "we are organizing to make sure that people know we have a voice and that we have a really wonderful community here that's accepting as well and that we need to come together during this time to help each other."
H.O.P.E. is a new grassroots organization that advocates on behalf of the LGBTQ community as well others in need of support.
"For example, right now undocumented people are being attacked, our Muslim brothers and sisters are also being attacked", Funes says, "an attack on one is an attack on all an so we need to organize and make sure we're fighting for each other's rights."
Following the event at Town Center West, there will be an "After Party" at Rooney's Irish Pub in in Old Town Orcutt with live entertainment performed by San Francisco-based Grace Towers.
The Santa Maria Pride Celebration begins Saturday, August 12 at 11 am at the Santa Maria Town Center West parking lot.
There was a Pride celebration in Santa Maria in June 2012 organized by the Gay Rights Advocates for Change & Equality which was established in October 2009.
