SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - They celebrated all things vegetarian and vegan in San Luis Obispo on Saturday as part of the first Central Coast VegFest.
Hundreds of people flocked to the Veterans Memorial Building on Grand Avenue in downtown San Luis Obispo to sample various vegetarian and vegan delicacies.
Local non-profit groups were also on hand to provide information about their services.
Organizers hope it is the first of what will be an annual event to promote the vegetarian and vegan lifestyle.
"This is growing not only in popularity but in necessity", said VegFest organizer Jenny B. Jones, "as we get a larger and larger population, the population cannot be sustained on an animal-based diet it really can only be sustained on a plant-based diet, so it's almost by necessity but we'd rather have people come to it because they want to and not because they have to."
The Central Coast VegFest is modeled on similar vegetarian and vegan festivals and events across the country and around the world.
