BUELLTON, Calif. - One of the most iconic restaurants in the state is celebrating a pretty important birthday right here on the Central Coast. Pea Soup Andersen's in Buellton opened its doors 90 years ago.
Originally named Andersen's Electric Cafe, the restaurant established itself as a must stop for travelers with its home-style cooking and especially its legendary pea soup. It opened on June 13, 1924, which also happened to be on a Friday.
Over the years, the restaurant has grown to include a gift store, Christmas shop, bakery, and banquet hall. While those are all popular attractions, make no mistake what is the calling card for the restaurant that has served million of visitors over the past 9 decades.
"It seems to be what everybody wants," said Mark Landseadel of Pea Soup Andersen's. "We get so many people that want that. We offer other soups during the course of the week, but mostly it's the pea soup."
In case you're wondering just how much Pea Soup Andersen's serves, they told us on a slow day they'll sell well over 200 gallons. On a busy day, they serve nearly 500 gallons.
"It has become a place where people will say I remember coming here ... or when my grandparents brought my parents here and now we're bringing out parents here," said Landseadel. "So I think that has carries us quite a while."
