Charity Softball Tournament To Benefit Carpinteria Man

CARPINTERIA, Calif. - A tight knit community is coming together this weekend for a Carpinteria man battling colon cancer.

Ray Martinez is a well know painter and softball player from Carpinteria. Martinez is a husband and father of two who just finished his final chemotherapy treatment. Friends and family wanted to do something to show how much Ray means to them and put together a charity softball tournament in his name.

"This is like the poster boy that you can beat cancer," his sister Maitye said. "His attitude from day one was 'I got this.'

Ray has played softball in Carpinteria and Santa Barbara for years. His buddies say Ray is the kind of guy that makes other feel good.

"Once we found out about his situation a couple of friends got together and just started talking about let's put on a tournament," Ruben Regalaeo said. "It's a way that we can all have fun and be involved and raise money with his fight."

Tournament organizers say they hope to raise $5,000 for Ray and his family.

If you would like to attend the event it's at Elings Park Saturday and Sunday starting at 8 a.m. and running throughout the day. All proceeds from the tournament, food sold and donations go to Ray.
