Homeless Speak Out About New Plan
Many homeless persons on State Street downtown have quite a bit to say about the new 12-point plan Santa Barbara has presented to deal with issues relating to homelessness.
The solutions came out of many weeks of meetings that included city, business and health leaders. Issues about more police enforcement, problems with aggressive panhandling, adding beds to shelters and getting chronic drug and alcohol users in rehabilitation are all part of the plan. One homeless person, Cliff, said he is passive not aggressive when he asks for money. His sign says, "Pretty please with sugar on top." Another transient says she agrees, the aggressive panhandlers can be a problem, and does not disagree with tougher police enforcement in those areas. A business man said it was a complex problem and needs this type of solution, with many efforts going the same direction at once. Senior Reporter John Palminteri was downtown talking to the homeless and shoppers about the issue and has our report. |
