SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The veterinary team at Santa Barbara Zoo treated an Indian Crested porcupine with breast cancer, which inadvertently coincided with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
14-year-old Bam Bam's keepers discovered two lumps on her body a few months ago. A veterinarian determined the porcupine had breast cancer.
In June, the vet team successfully performed a double mastectomy on Bam Bam. The zoo posted an update on the porcupine's condition on its social media pages. The team will continue to check for irregularities every day and will conduct follow-up exams to ensure Bam Bam is cancer-free. Her keepers wanted to share Bam Bam's story to remind people to get examined for breast cancer.
October marks National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
