SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department closed several beaches throughout the South County following the recent storm due to high bacterial levels.
The following beaches are closed to the public until further notice:
- Arroyo Burro Beach
- Carpinteria State Beach
- East Beach at Mission Creek
- East Beach at Sycamore Creek
- El Capitan State Beach
- Hope Ranch Beach
- Goleta Beach
- Summerland Beach
- Butterfly Beach
- Hammond Beach
Public Health officials say the levels of bacteria highly exceed standards levels and all ocean water at these beaches should be considered contaminated.
There are unknown amounts of untreated sewage and possible chemical contaminants in the water and sand.
The following beaches will be open:
- Gaviota State Beach
- Refugio State Beach
- Leadbetter Beach
- Sands Beach at Coal Oil Point
- Guadalupe Dunes
- Jalama Beach
Residents should respect a buffer zone of 400 feet of beach area on both sides where sediment from the mud flows are being placed, health officials say. An orange fencing will mark this buffer zone.
If the sand or water look or smell out of the ordinary, officials say avoid contact.
