High Levels of Mercury in Lake Nacimiento fish

Written by Kyra Jenkins

The County of San Luis Obispo Environmental Health Services has revised eating guidelines for Lake Nacimiento. Mercury levels in fish at Lake Nacimiento are among the highest in the state. The guidelines alert childbearing age women and children to avoid eating all fish from the lake.

Everyone is also advised to avoid eating white, largemouth and spotted bass.

Mercury is a metal that can be harmful to the human nervous system. High mercury levels can affect development in children and women who are pregnant or may become pregnant.

Shark and swordfish contain the highest amounts of mercury so women of childbearing age and children shouldn't consume them.
