Tipline Warning - Mobile Dent Repair

Written by KEYT Anchor

C.J. Ward says he's been getting calls from people who say they were ripped off by a group of men who claim they will fix the dents in your car for a great price. One of those people is Santa Barbara resident Peter Bertling.

He tells Key News that they showed up at his front door offering to fix his BMW. He says the guy who did all the talking claimed they had been working on a neighbors car. Peter says the guy even had a book showing all the nice work they do. Peter also says they seemed legitimate so he gave them permission to work on his car, "They painted it and they put this wax over it and he said I'm doing this so it can harden. Don't take it off until tomorrow, but you can take it down to the car wash tomorrow and they'll remove it and it will look perfect. He gave me his card, phone number and when I took it down to the car wash the following day it looked terrible and the paint didn't match and there was a lot of overspray."

Peter says the guy got $450 of his money and the phone number has been disconnected. Peter had his car fixed already, but he says it cost him another $900.

C.J. spoke to Woody from Woody's Auto Detailing in Santa Barbara who says he knows of at least two dozen victims who all tell the same story.

The suspects operate from San Luis Obispo County to Ventura County and they like to approach people in parking lots.

If you see them, call our newsroom assignment desk at 882-3930 or if you're a victim call our Tipline at 882-3903.. again that number is 882-3903... maybe we can catch them in the act!
